What’s new & Should you go for the upgrade?

Apple has announced their brand new iPhone 14 series lineup, and they claim it to be “the best iPhone lineup yet ” as they always do. Apple has decided to go big this year making iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 plus bigger and they ditched the mini series, the iPhone 14 lineup models are between 6.1 and 6.7 inches in length, i.e., their screens are bigger than the iPhone 13's.

But the real hype and eyes are on the Pro variants (iPhone 14 Pro & iPhone 14 Pro Max) with a good range of interesting new features, including the all-new Dynamic island, an Always-On display, the A16 Bionic chip, and the new Deep Purple colourway. 

Let’s see if the Pro lives up to the hype when compares to its predecessor the iPhone 13 Pro.

Affordability: iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro 

Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly, the iPhone 14 Pro models are no cheaper than the iPhone 13 Pro models. Sadly they’re getting more expensive for UK buyers, with iPhone 14 Pro starting at £1,099 which is around £150 more than its predecessor (iPhone 13 Pro) for UK buyers, while the price stays the same for US customers. Similarly, iPhone 14 Pro Max will start at £1,199, again showing a markup in UK pricing.

Whereas iPhone 13 Pro costs around £949 and iPhone 13 Pro Max stands at £1049. Unfortunately, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models have been withdrawn from the official Apple website so if you’re looking for one, try your luck at the nearest apple store or head over to Gadcet.com and grab one at the best price. 

It can be worthwhile to purchase an iPhone 13 Pro model right now before they all sell out if the price is your main consideration.

Design: iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro 

At first sight, the design of the iPhone 14 Pro doesn't appear to have changed much when compared to the iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone 14 Pro is somewhat heavier and thicker than its predecessor, but both phones have the same aluminium chassis, straight metal edges, triple lens camera mount, and a glass back. 

The pill-shaped cutout from the new Dynamic Island feature, in which the area containing the TrueDepth camera transforms to display more information on the screen, has taken the place of the notch.The front and rear Ceramic Shield protective glass on both phones is the same, and they both have an IP68 designation for dust and water protection. 

The iPhone 14 Pro still uses a Lightning port rather than a USB-C port. However, due to changes in EU law and the demand for parallel legislation in the US, that may alter in the upcoming year.

DISPLAY: iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro 

There are only a few very subtle hardware improvements between the iPhone 14 Pro's display and that of the iPhone 13 Pro. Both phones have the same 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen (6.7-inch if you choose the Pro Max variants), and both have the same 460 ppi pixel density. The 14 Pro's have a slightly larger screen, since the resolution of the two phones differs.

ProMotion adaptive 120Hz displays were first introduced to the iPhone with the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

While the refresh rates of the new iPhone pro models can still reach up to 120Hz, they can also scale back to 1Hz as opposed to the 10Hz baseline of the iPhone 13 pro models. Since the iPhone 14 Pro models perform more slowly than their predecessors when necessary, this reduced minimum refresh rate will increase their power efficiency. 

Moreover the iPhone 14 Pro has an HDR brightness of 1600 nits, compared to the iPhone 13 Pro's support for a standard display brightness of 1000 nits and an HDR brightness of 1200 nits. Additionally, the iPhone 14 Pro display can reach a maximum brightness of 2000 nits outside for enhanced visibility.

Camera: iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro 

Both phones appear to have a similar triple camera setup at first sight. The iPhone 14 Pro increases the main camera to a 48MP offering with a 65% larger sensor compared to the 12MP primary on offer with the iPhone 13 Pro. The other three cameras remain the same at 12MP ultrawide, 12MP telephoto, and 12MP TrueDepth.

Apple's most recent iPhone Pro also includes a Photonic Engine to enhance low-light performance, as well as second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilisation and an upgraded selfie camera with autofocus. Additionally, the iPhone 14 Pro has an 8K video camera.
